IP technology - it's not just the housing!

That is, what's behind mere "waterproofing."

I am extremely pleased to write an article about my favorite series of recent years. The PROTEUS series from Elation Professional is well named. Yes, it's named well and the models in the series are also named well. In fact, I already compared them to characters from Asterix in an article from Elation's open days.

Having a good name is half the battle. They called me Kamil and I got to write this article. If my name was Andrew they would write to me, and I would just not read, but approve. In general, I say right away that I will request 12 pcs. Proteus Maximus for each gig because I love them. I won't disdain the expensive Elation nine either. They will be treated with respect and kept in boxes. Promises.

Introduction to IP technology

Well, but let's get a little closer to the technology of this series. There will be a short story about Elation engineers' battle with the elements. What is IP65 I already wrote in this article. In a nutshell, it is the degree of protection of a device from water and general external factors that can damage the device.

It took a while before Elation developed a technology to present to the world. They started brainstorming in 2015. All this in order to ''develop a device that could withstand the heat and sands of Dubai, the scorching humidity of Florida or the freezing Austrian winter.'' According to Irek Skoczowski, head of Elation's R&D department. Sounds familiar. I hope that the frigid summer of the Baltic Sea and the harvest festival were also taken into account because there ino dust.

What does a car have to do with a moving head? Fighting frost.

Many solutions were taken from the automotive industry. Such as the sealing sublimated in the air conditioning systems of cars or cooling. It is worth noting that such a device must endure really considerable temperatures when sealed tightly.

At first, the problem appeared to be condensing water inside the unit, which at normal temperatures escaped as steam through the air valves, but not in very cold weather. The water tended to accumulate in some areas. A number of ''very precise hardware modifications were used to collect and retain moisture until the light heated up and released the water as steam.'' Mr. Frost vanquished?

Well not exactly, because when the series was expanded to include LED devices the temperature dropped and water accumulated in the coldest place causing the lens to fog up. Taking a solution from the automotive industry, a heating element and a fan were installed to blow warm air. Yes my dear friends. Proteuses have heating.

Warmest under the lighthouse - fighting the heat

When the problem with the cold environment was solved problems with the hot environment were encountered. The motors began to overheat, which prompted engineers to modify the software. They also developed an improved focus and zoom pole shifting system with high-end bearings and specially designed oils, which was already performing well in all conditions. Yes my dear friends. Proteus has oil.

Over the next few months, the company tested the equipment in the most extreme conditions. Dubai where the equipment was exposed to hellish sun, strong winds and sandstorms was a good place for testing, but the most extreme was carried out in the company's laboratory. Here conditions were simulated that the user is unlikely to experience. Well, unless he treats the equipment with a flamethrower.

It took a long time to develop a cooling system for extremely high temperatures. A whole two years. An innovative system of heat sinks working together with fans was used to dissipate heat. In addition, care was taken to ensure that it worked evenly throughout the device and prevented points that might overheat. At the same time, acoustic levels were measured at every stage of modification so that it would operate at the lowest possible sound level. The heat was overcome.

Fighting the windmills, that is, the wind....

After all, Proteus devices can also end up on top of a skyscraper, where they will be subjected to strong winds. Of course, such tests were also performed to measure wind tolerance, but also 3G overloads. Corrosion resistance tests were also performed in saltwater conditions, if the heads were to end up on a fishing boat or pirate ship....

The temperatures in which they tested were 50 degrees Celcius on the plus side and minus 40. Everything is fine and Proteus is ready. It might seem that every problem solved, but alas. The sun falling directly through the lens into the device creates a narrow laser beam. The components didn't stand a chance. Here below are pictures of the damage:

However, in the sweat of the brow, a way was also found for this. As the manufacturer told us.

The solution involved a combination of software and hardware modifications - a sun protection mode that uses sensors to tell the unit to position itself away from the sun combined with special sealing plates that protect belts, fans and valves.

All in all, Elation has really nailed the development of high-end protection technology. So much so that they have even developed their own IP device testing equipment that is more precise in finding errors. Using bubble...

Protection from high temperatures, wind, water, writing, shocks! From all these powers the Proteus series is created. What the manufacturer guarantees that all devices in this series have implemented the described IP technology.

Maybe it looks a bit like sponsored and biased content - but it's not quite like that. What's true is getting paid for it, well, because you don't get it in the snout for free these days. But I wanted to give you an idea of what's more or less hidden under the IP tag.

Not to be too nice - I must admit that somewhere sideways from Elation comes out a complete lack of professionalism! - How can you not test the device in Martian conditions in the age of space conquest! Hi!
